How to Select the Right Color Palette for Your Home

Paint Scheme Blog | How to Select the Right Color Palette for Your Home | Amazing Spaces Storage Centers

Choosing the the right color palette for your home is an important aspect of home decoration that is often taken for granted. Wall colors play a very significant part in influencing your emotions. If the right color palette is neglected, then the beautifully designed interior can seem extremely bland and insipid. On the other hand, light complements dark colors beautifully and if you neglect either one, then the outcome can be disastrous.

Before deciding on a color scheme, you must also create a plan as to how you will go about putting the colors in place. For example, how will you group the colors in the room? Will you use one big color or several small ones? The right color palette for your home will enable you to achieve the balance and harmony you desire.

Step 1: Choosing the right color for each room! This can often be a daunting task, but, we’re taking the confusion out of it by providing some helpful tips into coordinating all of those paint colors and selecting the right one for each room!

First, we’ll start with offering a better understanding of the variety of COLOR SCHEMES available:

Color combination plays an integral role in developing your interior decoration. Hence, you must know how to match colors properly and appropriately. There are various ways by which one can use a color wheel to select appropriate colors.

We’ve outlined 4 simple color categories to follow when you are choosing paint for any room and each one depends on what style you like best!

  • Warm Spaces—Includes the warmer colors of the color wheel, such as inviting reds, oranges and yellows.  These colors encourage socializing and activity, which are perfect for spaces you want people to congregate (i.e. living room or dining room).  You can even create a warm space using tans, browns, and grays that have warm undertones.
  • Cool CombinationsThe cool side of the color wheel is made up of greens, blues and purples.  Palettes featuring these colors create a soothing, calm, tranquil atmosphere that is well suited to relaxing spaces, such as a bathroom, family room, office, or bedroom.
  • AnalogousAnalogous colors are those that appear adjacent on the color wheel. As neighbors, they pair well together and offer a pleasing visual harmony. An example of analogous combinations would be yellow-orange, yellow and yellow-green in the same room. Make sure you have enough contrast when choosing an analogous color scheme.
  • Complementary Hues—Complementary colors are any two hues that sit directly opposite on the color wheel.  These would be red and green, or yellow and purple.  Using complementary colors produces a dynamic, lively look because they provide visual contrast and magnify each other’s intensity.

There is a science behind color palette selections. When you combine two similar colors, their contrast becomes obvious. The mixing of light and dark shades also makes them obvious. Thus, you can take note of any combination that strikes your fancy. In case of blues and greens, you can create a soothing effect. However, you cannot do that with deep reds and dark browns.

Next, let’s talk about how lighting impacts color!

Determine whether you have natural daylight or artificial lighting in the space because this makes a big impact on your selections! Consider how much light reflects off of the colors and how much it is absorbed into the wall. For example, Natural daylight is the best light for the purest color replication. Rooms that are flooded with light at sunrise or sunset receive warm light which imparts a yellow or reddish cast to many colors.  Rooms facing north get cool, indirect light all day – which adds a slight bluish cast to pure whites.

If you want a cozy atmosphere, pair warm colors and warm lighting. Warm artificial light, such as LED and halogen bulbs with color temperature ratings, intensifies and deepens the appearance of red, yellow, and orange colors.  Blue hues that have red undertones will also look richer with warm lighting.

For a crisp, refreshing appearance use LED and CFL bulbs rated at 6000K or higher to produce a cool light that will amplify blues and greens. Bolder, brighter colors tend to stand up better, as cool light often turns muted tones muddy.
