With the number of coronavirus cases continuing to rise, lots of people are working remotely from home in an effort to make sure that their families stay healthy. While working from home is safer and more convenient, it also has some environmental hindrances. Whether it’s your family quarantining with you, kids out of school, or even your pet, there are many distractions that could result in you feeling less productive!  Thankfully, there are many different ways to diminish the stress of your at-home work environment to help improve your mental and emotional health!  We’ve put together some helpful advice to create the perfect working space through implementing some practical tips!

  1. Get Organized-Professional Organizing Consultant, Marie Kondo, suggests that the first step of re-organizing your desk/office space is to separate all of your things into 3 categories: Books, Papers, and Miscellaneous. Making these piles will help you determine what you actually need and want in front of you while you’re working, and what can be stored away or thrown out.
  2. Disinfect-Once your space is completely clear this is the best time to clean and disinfect an area that doesn’t get enough TLC. Make sure your office space is dust (and virus!) free with disinfectant sprays/wipes and a vacuum cleaner. Check out THIS article with 6 ways to naturally disinfect your home!
  3. Store it away-You may feel overwhelmed with all of the books, papers, and misc. that you’ve decided to keep around you in your workspace, however, we have the solution: storage!  Large uniform storage containers will help de-clutter your space and limit the visual chaos. Small uniform storage containers for smaller miscellaneous tools like paper clips and pencils can help organize the inside of your drawers or can become a decoration for easy access on top of your desk. 4. Avoid cluttered technology-You need all of your technology easily accessible to you when you work from home, just as it would be if you were actually in the office! With the desktop, printer, and phone chargers  in your smaller space, it’s likely that you’ll run into the problem of overcrowding your outlets or tangling up the cords! De-tangling cords can be such a tedious and time-consuming task. The best way to avoid that problem is with cord clips that stick to your desk or wall and keep your space tidy! Additionally, narrow down just how many electronics you really need out on your desk and which ones can be stowed away.
  5. Designated work times-Keeping yourself accountable is tricky for a lot of people when you’re used to your daily routine. One of the best ways to avoid procrastination is to designate work times for yourself. Making a physical schedule to display on your door for you and your family to see will influence you to keep up with your work and will hopefully help limit any family distractions! If your phone isn’t necessary for any of your projects, set your phone to Do Not Disturb for these scheduled work times as well.
  6. Allocate space-It’s difficult for many people to rewire their brains to be productive in a setting other than the office or meeting rooms, especially when you associate your home with relaxation and family matters. This extra mental push to be productive and ignore distractions can cause unnecessary stress. That’s why it’s so important to trick your brain into associating one personal spot in your home to be a place of efficient, focused, and productive work. You can trick your brain through your senses such as sight, smell, and hearing, to separate this part of the house from the rest of your house. One way you can do this is by having a certain room scent or candle in that room, so whenever you walk in, your brain subconsciously knows you’re in your workspace. You can also do this by hanging up art, having a room color theme, playing a certain type of music, or even having that room temperature-controlled to be slightly cooler than the rest of the house (Fun Fact: A cooler climate keeps the brain awake and alert!)

We hope these simple tips help you reduce stress and increase productivity while working at home!
