Room-by-Room Organization: The Office

Organize Your Office

Whether you utilize your home office full-time, part-time or just use it to sort through mail and the day to day bills—this blog post is for you! We’ve compiled some simple but effective tips to getting your office space organized! Not only does this apply to your home office, but could also be carried over to your actual office space, which will leave your coworkers singing your (organization) praises! Better yet, did you know that an organized work space leads to higher productivity rates? Let’s get started!

Clear the way—Looking at a pile of unfiled paperwork, unread books, and a stack of empty folders? We feel your pain and have solutions! One of the easiest ways to get started with a project like this is to remove everything from your desk and place each item into categories. For example, client folders in one pile, notebooks in another, accessories and pens together, etc. Once the desk is completely emptied evaluate which items you use regularly and which items you don’t use at all! Be honest when asking yourself this question. Create a “giveaway” pile and a “keep” pile to place items into. This includes decorative items that may not be serving you well and are simply there to collect dust!

Establish work zones—Decide what type of activity happens in each area of your office. You’ll probably have a main workspace (most likely your desk,) a reference area (filing cabinet, shelves, binders,) and a supply area (closet, shelves or drawers.) Tackle each of these spaces by first clearing them out (as mentioned above) and then determine where you need to place each item, given the work zone!

Filing systems—One of the most dreaded office organization tasks is sorting through the filing cabinets. However, this should be all that much easier, now that we live in a digital age and need limited paper copies! Think about how you can minimize your paperwork in order to maximize your storage space and get organized! Shred any paperwork that you don’t need to keep and can store digitally!

Desk organizers—Invest in a desk organizer to be used inside your drawers! This helps keep items in their designated place and prevents them from jostling around. Desk organizers are best used for small items like paper clips, tape, staples, and post-it notes.

Label it—A simple label maker can make all the difference and keep you organized for the long-term! Use it to label your individual files, drawers or additional storage bins. By having designated spaces labeled for storage you ensure that you don’t forget where to return an item after using it and it prevents you from scrambling as you search for it last minute!

Add life to your space—We think about adding house plants to our home spaces, but, what about your office space? They have been proven to help reduce stress and increase productivity! So, add some greenery to your space, we promise you won’t regret it!

Cheers to a new year of clarity and productivity as you implement organization tips across all your most-used spaces! It’s AMAZING what a difference some simple steps can make!
