Amazing Ways to Organize Your Storage Space
Maximizing your storage unit space at your storage facility isn’t as difficult as you might think it is; all you have to do is follow a few simple rules. In this post, we have outlined few ways you can maximize space and make your storage unit as useful as possible.
When our clients see their unit for the first time, first thing will come to their minds is how to place everything together, safe and organized at the same time. It’s often difficult to fully determine what size storage space you need. Eyeballing your items often doesn’t cover ALL the items you need to store (garage, basement – if you have one, items hidden in cabinets). To help make the process easier, we have an Amazing storage size calculator on our website, as well as a professionally trained team that can help guide you into the best space for you. Additionally, if you happen to rent a space that is too small, we’ll transfer you to the proper space, free of charge. Selecting, and if necessary adjusting, your Amazing space is the easy part.
When is time to organize your self-storage space, there must be certain steps to follow. Doing it properly will prevent future damage or the risk of getting yourself hurt in the process of moving in. Also, this will help you know exactly where you put each item so that it will not be hard to find and retrieve. More importantly, packing and organizing your things will make them last longer.
Some tips to help guarantee success in using your storage space:
Properly package and wrap your items
Strategically Stack Items
Place your heaviest items at the bottom- Sounds like a no-brainer, but important if you want to avoid getting crushed under an avalanche of toppling stacks of boxes. Don’t throw things in your unit without a plan in mind. Unbalanced stacks can cause havoc down the line. Learn more about how to maximize the safety of your storage space.
When packing clothes, make use of wardrobe boxes
Store mirrors and frames standing on end, never flat
We also highly recommend storing all mirrors and frames in a secure and expandable picture box. This will help make sure fragile items, like mirrors and picture frames make the most of your storage space and are safely secured your newly organized unit.
Plan Your Layout and Add Aisles to Your Space
Take a few moments to plot the layout of your unit, considering which items you think you’ll need to access more often. Place items/boxes that you plan on accessing more often in the front of your unit. It will make future visits to your unit quick and easy.Create a walkway in the unit so you can access items in back – we cannot emphasize the importance of this enough! Draw a blueprint of your unit and account for some space throughout for easy navigation when you visit later. This will allow you to access a box without having to move anything out of the way and store the heavy boxes at the bottom, the lighter ones on top. Place the boxes with the things that you’ll most frequently need at the front part of storage unit. This is my favorite way to organize your storage space and trust me, it’s well worth your sanity.
Shelves are your best friend
If you’re using storage for a business or to organize your home, the best space saver is utilizing shelving space. We did this in our storage unit and it has made a world of a difference. Think of your storage space, as a closet and organize accordingly. Free standing storage shelving helps keep items off the floor and allows for easier access. Shelving can be used in conjunction with stacked totes or boxes to maximize space.
Label, label, LABEL
This is key for quick identification of what’s inside those boxes. Use a fresh black permanent marker so labels won’t fade away, and be sure to write legibly. Ideally, use white label stickers instead of writing directly on boxes.
Whether you need to label items from a move with our tag-a-room tape or simply need to organize the boxes, proper labeling is key to an organized unit. When packing boxes, make sure to label each side and the top of the box. This will be a lifesaver in the future. If you’re organizing office files, make sure to use file boxes with lids and a space for easy labeling.
Dismantle Furniture as Much as Possible
By dismantling furniture and storing it upright along the sides of the unit, you’ll gain much more space in the center. To protect the furniture, wrap it in moving blankets.
Plan ahead – strategy, checklists, organization tools
The best way to organize your storage space: by planning ahead. Have a strategy for whatever task you are trying to accomplish: organizing your office, moving your home, decluttering and organizing. Label all the items you are putting into storage and have a checklist in place to keep track of the items. A written or typed list will prove useful. When you find yourself wondering where something is, you can quickly confirm it’s safe at the storage facility. We highly recommend you utilize convenient organization systems, such as our box labels or specialty tag-a-room tape, to make it even easier.

Thanks so much for the tips on how to organize your self-storage unit. My sister just downsized house and she doesn’t have room for all of her and her kid’s things anymore. She’s been thinking about renting a self-storage unit to put that extra stuff in.

It was really helpful when you said that dismantling furniture gives you more space. My mom was at my house last night for dinner, and she talked about how she and my dad want to move into a smaller home next month since all of my siblings have moved out, so they need to rent a storage unit for all of her decorations and furniture that won’t fit in the new house. I’ll pass this information along to her so she can know how to properly organize a storage unit

I love how you talk about the importance of properly packaging your stuff to avoid damage. My sister recently downsized and no longer has room for all her things. We’ve been looking into finding a storage facility that we can trust to keep her things safe so that we can avoid any kind of damage to her things. https://www.bandrstorage.com/security

I like the tip you gave that you should consider thinking about the layout to make the most out of your storage space. A few nights ago, my friend informed me he was looking for a self-storage that he would use as storage for his apparel business products. He asked if I had any thoughts on the best option to consider. I appreciate your explanation about the importance of consulting a self-storage service. I’ll tell him it will be much better if he consults one.
